In December 2022 we outlined the future of GWENT, introducing a set of initiatives named GWENTfinity — our plan to transition GWENT’s future from CDPR into the hands of you, the community. And just like last time, we want things to be as transparent as possible as we move deeper into the transition, because, obviously, this is a pretty substantial change for GWENT — a game that has grown so much since the open beta all the way back in 2017.
The community has always been core to making the game what it is. That’s why we had the confidence to move ahead with GWENTfinity in the first place: there isn’t really anyone better to take charge of GWENT and see it move into a new era than you. It’s a privilege to even have a community that is passionate enough to take the reins, so once the last update hits in December and 2024 rolls around, seeing GWENT become yours is going to feel like a watershed moment.
But moments like this are always bittersweet. On one hand we get to see the game live on in the capable hands of the community, but on the other hand it means coming to terms that all good things do have to come to an end. For us, it means saying goodbye to not only the development of the game, but also to some of our team. As the transition to GWENTfinity gets closer, the resources and roles required behind the scenes are naturally declining. Throughout the year we’ve been transferring some of the team members to other projects, but we have to part ways with some. Until the end of the year, about 30 remaining GWENT team members are going to part ways with CD PROJEKT RED. It’s never easy to say goodbye. And even though decisions like this are unavoidable and a natural result of the transition, we’d like to express our sincere thanks for all the contributions these team members have made to GWENT — just like the community, you helped make the game what it is today.
Rest assured that we are still working hard to follow through with the roadmap and make sure the game is where we want it to be by the time GWENTfinity kicks into action.
